Before I begin, let me say this. There are a ton of great modern action films out there! But for me, my favorite decade for the action movie truly has to be the the 198os! I mean alot of what makes action movies great, were defined in the 1980s! And so for me, I have recently just been thoroughly enjoying some classics from that era!
And one of these movies, is actually one of my favorite of the genre in general, and it is one that I haven’t seen in maybe 10 years, but is more then well worth it! That movie is, Commando (1985)!
Written by: Steven e. de Souza (48 Hrs) based on the story that was created by: Jeph Loeb (Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Animated Movie), Matthew Weisman (Teen Wolf) & Steven e. de Souza & Directed by: Mark L. Lester (Firestarter). Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger (The Terminator), Alyssa Milano (Fear), Rae Dawn Chong (Quest For Fire), Dan Hedaya (Blood Simple) & Vernon Wells (Innerspace).
This movie tells the story of how a former special forces commander by the name of John Matrix (Schwazenegger) is living the simple life with his daughter Jenny (Milano), after his unit is disbanded… But some one from his days in the special forces wants him to come back and do one last mission… A mission that goes against everything he fought for!
You see, when his old team starts being murdered one right after the other… General Franklin Kirby (Played by: David Patrick Kelly) comes to help protect him and his daughter from whomever is trying to destroy him and his unit!
But when Matrix’s daughter is kidnapped, and the kidnappers want him to assasinate the leader of a 3rd world country to get her back… Matrix refuses to kill the 3rd world leader… And will have the time it takes the plane to land in the country to get her back! (24 hrs!)
Now besides the obvious, and the same type of brilliant special effects that demonstrated what made special effects great in actions movies since the 60s! Is the story! I mean, I have seen this movie atleast a dozen times and each time I have found this movie to keep me on the edge of my seat each time!
And here is a couple of things that I thought that you guys might find of interest:
1. There was a sequel that was in the works for this movie in 86… But Schwarzenegger was not really interested in reprising his role in the film… And so ultimately the effort was retooled and Die Hard (1988) with Bruce Willis (Hudson Hawk) was made instead!
2. This is the second of three films that the late great Bill Paxton (Aliens) worked on with Arnold Schwarzenegger! The other two are: The Terminator (1984) and True Lies (1994)!
So if you are looking for a fun classic action film that will keep you engaged and on the edge of your seat… Check this one out! I think that you will be glad you did!
