Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Camper (1988)

by  |  April 10th, 2012  |  Horror

Back in 2010 I wrote a recommendation for the movie, Sleepaway Camp (1983). Now the story doesn’t end there… the sequel called Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Camper is a fascinating one, you see, this movie albeit a definite sequel to the original movie, was completely different!

What I mean by this is that, Robert Hiltzik (Return To Sleepaway Camp) was replaced by Michael A. Simpson (Funland) as the director, Bruce Springsteen’s sister, Pamela Springsteen (Fast Time At Ridgemont High) replaced Felissa Rose (Silent Night Zombie Night) and the new Camp which was first used in this movie and was continued in Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenage Wasteland!

Written by: Fritz Gordon (Sleepaway Camp 3: Teenaged Wasteland), and Directed by: Michael A. Simpson. Starring: Pamela Springsteen, Renée Estevez (The West Wing), Tony Higgins (Andersonville), Brian Patrick Clarke (Renee) and Walter Gotell (The African Queen).

Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Camper tells of how a few years after the massacre at Camp Arawak, Peter Baker (A.K.A. ‘Angela Baker’, A.K.A. ‘The Angel Of Death’) has disappeared…

Now there is a new camp that has set up shop a few miles away from the old Camp Arawak locations… Running this camp is the kindly Uncle John (Gotell) and his head of Councilors by the name of, T.C. (Clarke)! But in the grand tradition of Camp Arawak, there are a few nice and good Councilors, but there are also some horrible Councilors who would like nothing more then to have sex and do what they want while pretending to watch the kids!

Angela Johnson (Springsteen) is niether and yet both! Angela is ultra straight edged, and is willing to, ‘send kids home’ at the slightest infraction!

Angela (Springsteen) and Molly (Estevez) talking at an abandoned Cabin area.

Now Angela starts sending kids home one night when she discovers that one of the girls that is staying in her cabin for the summer is with the boys telling ghost stories! Of course Angela doesn’t like this and sends this girl home the only way that she knows how!

The next day Angela informs Uncle John that she had to send the girl home over night!

As the summer goes on, Angela starts slowly one by one sending the girls from her cabin home at the slightest infractions! But is Angela really sending her kids home? Or is Angela Johnson really Angela Baker? And if so, is the, ‘Angel Of Death’ recreating the massacre that she was so famous for committing at Camp Arawak?

Angela Johnson as she is sending these two sisters home in the most brutal way!

Another thing that I like about this movie is just how they inserted a little bit of, A Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday The 13th in to the movie when 2 campers re-create the Freddy Kruger face and glove, and Jason Voorhees mask, and how Angela uses the re-created Freddy glove to kill one of these campers!

I also thought that it was really cool that they used Renée Estevez (The daughter of Martin Sheen and the sister of Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez) in this movie. The Sheen/Estevez name it turns out was also used quite a bit in this movie with the 2 younger kids that were used regularly for the movie were also called, Emilio and Charlie (named after Renée Estevez’s brothers!

Now in my opinion this movie is as good as the first one, and believe it or not, this movie was the movie that introduced me to the series! So I highly recommend this one as well, it is a fun one!
