The Stuff (1985)

For several decades now unfortunately drugs in our culture have been very prevalent, and as a matter of fact up until recently, drugs in popular culture has been to some degree considered to be kind of a popular thing!

Now fortunately it seems like with the antics of today’s drug or booze soaked artists being mocked fairly regularly, and heavily publicized in the media, that it seems like it is being less promoted as a good thing or at all, and at least in the movies that I watch are promoted as a bad thing!

Now you might say that, The Stuff (1985) could loosely be considered (in a sort of concealed way) to be a great anti-drug horror movie!

Written and Directed by: Larry Cohen (Maniac Cop). Starring: Michael Moriarty (Pale Rider), Andrea Marcovicci (The Hand), Scott Bloom (The Red Herring), Garret Morris (Saturday Night Life), Paul Sorvino (Chiller) and Danny Aiello (Jacob’s Ladder).

There is a new taste sensation that is hitting the nation called, ‘The Taste’… Nobody seems to know what it is or what it comes from, and all of the people that were involved in bringing, ‘The Stuff” to the world have just about all disappeared in some way!

A Promotional image from the movie.

Now that, ‘The Stuff’ has begun to become a serious threat against the Ice Cream industry, all of the CEO’s hire a guy by the name of David ‘Mo’ Rutherford (Moriarty) to discover what the secret to, ‘The Taste’ is, and potentially bring this threat down!

Now as Mo investigates deeper and deeper in to, ‘The Stuff’ he will come to meet, Jason (Bloom) who has run away, after his family is taken over by, ‘The Stuff’ and an advertising executive who helped to bring, ‘The Stuff’ to the rest of the world, as well as a disgraced Ice Cream CEO, and a militia leader! And the deeper that this team dives in to what, ‘The Stuff’ really is, they will discover something about, ‘The Stuff’ that makes this product, ‘all natural’, but will threaten everyone in the United States if Mo and his small team can’t stop, ‘The Stuff’ from spreading!

Nicole and Jason as they are trying to escape from, 'The Stuff;

Now what I have to admit that I also like about this movie is that I am farely certain that this movie was at least loosely the basis for, The Faculty (1998). I mean, ‘The Faculty’ is a movie that is based on an alien entity that tries to take over every human on Earth, and ‘The Stuff’ is about substance from the Earth itself, trying to take over every man, woman and child on Earth!

Another thing that I thought that I would mention is Larry Cohen’s direction in this movie, so far everything that I have ever seen from this guy has been utterly awesome (including the Maniac Cop movies), his vision as a horror movie director (including this one) is absolutely brilliant, and makes Larry Cohen in my opinion a true genius!

Now if your looking for a horror movie to really dive in to!  Then I highly recommend this one, it is a fun one!

    Blast from the past! I barely remember this movie, but I do remember liking it when I was younger. I’ll have to see it again and see if it still holds up. It’s like Anti-consumerism meets The Blob meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers… or something!

    ‘The Stuff’ movie is one of the weirdest 80’s monster films ever made. I like the part where the guy’s neck bulges the stuff cream out of his body like if his body was mutating into something horrible, and it was fuuny in the creepy way. They seriously ought to go back into making hundreds to thousands 80’s style horror films and ought to make thousands of more NECK BULGING MUTANT, Horror Movies. I’M SERIOUS! They really should make more of these kind of special effects cheesy horror movies.
