The Faculty (1998)

by  |  March 5th, 2012  |  Sci Fi

Written by: Kevin Williamson (Scream) and Directed by: Robert Rodriguez (From Dusk Till Dawn). Starring: Jordana Brewster (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Clea Duvall (Girl Interrupted), Laura Harris (Total Recall: The Series), Josh Hartnett (Halloween: H20), Shawn Hatosy (The Joyriders), Famke Janssen (X-Men), Piper Laurie (Carrie), Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers), Robert Patrick (Fire In The Sky), Usher Raymond (She’s All That), Daniel von Bargen (The Silence Of The Lambs), Elijah Wood (The Good Son).

The Faculty is the idea that what if we have been being prepared for an Alien invasion through all the Science Fiction novels and movies that have been coming out for the last 50 years or so, so that when it actually happened, no one would believe it is happening!

What I mean by this is that in the small town of Herrington Ohio, there is a quiet Alien invasion starting with the school…

It all starts off one day when a shy girl next door type with a mysterious past by the name of Marybeth Louis Hutchinson (Harris) shows up at school. ¬†After that, starting with the Faculty, each and everyone in that School starts acting differently, including the fact that almost everyone has started needing to drink shocking amounts of water! Drug addicts are suddenly going straight, couples that always fought stopped fighting etc…

Now the change that was happening to the school started being discovered one day when an older teacher who had been going through the transformation was having an adverse reaction and is caught by Casey (Wood), and Zeke (Hartnett).

Later on that day, Casey and Delilah (Brewster), who both work on the school news paper head in to the Faculty lounge area looking for a scoop. While they are there they hear Coach Willis (Patrick) and Mrs. Olsen (Laurie) walking in and so decide to hide in the closet… As they are listening to the Coach and Mrs. Olsen having their strange conversation Nurse Harper (Played by: Salma Hayek) shows up! Of course the Nurse ends up being given one of these Alien parasites and joins the club…

Nurse Harper (Hayek) just before joining the ranks of the alien infested humans!

At this point Delilah and Casey notice the older teachers body is in the closet and fight their way past the three infected teachers and out of the school.

Now with certainty that Aliens are taking over the School, and with no one believing him, it will be up to Casey, and the ragtag resistance cell that he forms from the surviving students, including: ‘the drug dealer’ Zeke who had found the old lady with Casey, ‘the Captain of the Cheerleading squad’ Delilah, who found out what is going on at the school with Casey in the Faculty rec room. A jock by the name of, ‘Stan’ (Hatosy), one of the rejects by the name of, ‘Stokely’ (Duvall), and the new girl in town whose secret will make it so fun could be have by all!

The Human Resistance begins.

Now what I like about this movie, and what I truly do think makes this an amazing B Movie is a couple of things:

1. This movie combined what would have been considered relatively new talent for its time, including: Josh Hartnett (This was his 3rd movie), Jordana Brewster (This was her second movie), etc… Along with veterans such as Elijah Wood, Piper Laurie, Robert Patrick, etc…

2. I thought that you guys might find this to be rather interesting, but it turns out that a high school in Lockhart Texas was where a lot this movie was filmed and that the football team from that School was used in the movie and so were the towns folk!

3. I am also pretty certain that David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel, the guys who brought to you the story that this movie is based off of, probably got there inspiration from, ‘Invasion Of The Body Snatchers’… I mean The Faculty is about a school in a small town being taken over by Aliens who inhabit their hosts, and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers tells the story of Earth being invaded by Aliens that end up becoming the bodies of the humans they wish to take over!

With that said folks, if your looking for a fun B Sci-FI/Horror movie to sink your teeth in to, then I recommend this one, it is a fun one!
