K2 (1991)

by  |  February 21st, 2012  |  Action/Adventure

Growing up in a family that loved movies and watched (and continues to watch) many movies both old and new, it is no surprise that growing up, that some of my favorite moments with my Dad have been watching movies! Rather they be watching the first 2 Alien movies with my sister and my Dad, or watching K2 (1991) with him!

Written by: Patrick Meyers, Scott Roberts (Screenplay) and Directed by: Franc Rodam (Moby Dick). Starring: Michael Biehn (Aliens), Matt Craven (Jacob’s Ladder), Patricia Charbonneau (Manhunter), Luca Bercovici (Rockula), Hiroshi Fujikoa (Ai ni tsuite) and Raymond J. Barry (Falling Down).

K2 tells the story of an American expedition that is being funded and lead by billionaire Phillip Claiborne (Barry) and the two friends, Harold Jameson (Craven), and Taylor Brooks (Biehn), whose names will go down in the history books!

You see one day while Harold and Taylor are mountain climbing as part of a test run that they are doing so that they can beat the record for speed climbing Mount McKinley later that year, they come across a group that is also doing some test climbing of their own…

In this group is Philip Claiborne, an old law school friend of Taylor’s, ‘Dallas’ (Bercovici), Jackie (Charbonneau), Takane (Fujikoa) and two other climbers.     Now these climbers are also doing a test run up the same hill that Tayor and Harold are on… the only difference is that this team is heading to the second tallest mountains, and one of the deadliest for climbers in the world called, ‘K2’ to become one of the first American teams to beat the mountain and make it to the top!

Now once both teams make it to the summit of the mountain that they are on and Harold and Taylor have set up their own base camp, they go over to Claiborne’s base camp and they both notice that Claiborne’s base camp aren’t tied off, despite a recent avalanche that occurred in the area of the mountain that they were on, and both try to convince that team to tie off their tents in case of another avalanche, but when they don’t do so Harold and Taylor head back to their own camp…

Later on that evening though, Harold tries to make sure that nothing happens and manages to tie off the big tent (that is holding Jackie, Philip, and Dallas (where Takane is at this point, who knows), but when he gets to the other smaller tent, Harold gets caught and gets asked to leave…

Well lo and behold, and avalanche does occur, and all but the arrogant climbers get saved (they were the only one’s that were not tied off and end up getting pushed off the mountain!

After everyone makes it down though, and after the funeral for the dead mountain climbers, Taylor tries to get both himself and Harold put on the roster to fill the spots that had been left empty by the other two dead climbers…

Dallas (Bercovici), Taylor (Biehn), Takane (Fujikoa), and Harold (Craven) on their way to destiny!

Both Harold and Taylor get their wish when Taylor gets a call from Phillip saying that they were on the list…

Despite the obvious unhappiness that Harold’s wife expresses, Harold and Taylor take off with Philip and the rest of Philips team on an adventure that will change their lives forever and one that they will never forget!

Now what I like about this movie and what I feel makes this an amazing B Movie is a couple of things:

1. The scenery in this movie is utterly spectacular!

2. I like the ultimate message in this movie, which I think could be summed up as, ‘A triumph of the human spirit, and the will to persevere despite overwhelming odds!’

3. Now something that I thought that you guys might find interesting is that this movie is based on a play that had been written as the thesis that Patrick Meyers had written in college, and all of this being based on the first successful Americans, ‘Louis Reichardt’ and ‘Scott Wickwire’ to make it to the top of K2!

If your looking for a fun Adventure movie to really sink your teeth in to, then I highly recommend this one.  It is a fun one!
