A Terminator kicking ass!

Unfortunately folks, I have not seen the movie, Terminator: Salvation (2009)… Now the reason that I mention this is because recently I was talking with a friend of mine who had offered to lend me a copy of Terminator: Salvation, and being a very amateur Tech guy, and reading articles for years and talking to other Tech savvy guys, it got me to thinking, ‘based on what I have seen in movies, would the advent of a truly artificial intelligence computer be a leap ahead technologically, or would it spell the end of the world?’

I mean a couple of truly classic examples of how an A.I. (or Artificial Intelligence) can bring about the end of the world is obviously the Terminator series. Now this series takes place in the past and the various attempts that this A.I. undertakes to send one of his androids back in time to terminate Sarah Connor (Originally played by Linda Hamilton) and her son, (which has been played by Edward Furlong, Nick Stahl and recently Christian Bale) from stopping Judgement Day and the A.I. from taking over the world.

For more information on this series, please check out the trailer for the movie that started it all, The Terminator (1984):

Another example of an Artificial Intelligence Computer creating the end of the world that we all know and love, is The Matrix series…

Keanu Reeves as Neo in, 'The Matrix'

Now this movie series is a little more fantasy, then the Terminator series is, but nevertheless this series tells of how after an A.I. Computer and it’s Machine Army take over the top side of the world, and after the majority of humanity has been forcibly imprisoned in a virtual reality simulation, so that the machines can use their body heat for energy. The last bastion of humanity sends out a small fleet of ships with the intentions of disrupting and maybe eventually destroying the matrix and eventually freeing mankind!

Now the movies themselves take place aboard a specific ship that is searching the matrix for, ‘The Chosen One’ (Played by: Keanu Reeves) and when they find him, his growth from being a human stuck in the matrix to being the savior of mankind!

Now for more information on this movie, please check out this trailer for the first movie, The Matrix (1999):

Now the last example that I thought I would give you guys is the movie, Android (1982)…

A scene from the 1982 classic, 'Android'

Now Android is a whole different kind of Artificial Intelligence Computer, in that instead of one A.I. controlling an entire Army that is attempting to wipe out mankind, it is a group of Android’s that have A.I. brains, that after an uprising on Earth are in hiding… That is until a greedy human corporation tries to restart it’s android servant research, and how the Androids that the Doctor on the lone research station turn on their masters and head to Earth to join with their Android brothers!

For more information on this movie, please check out the trailer for Android (1982):

Now those are just a few of the truly awful examples from movies of how A.I. can destroy the world we love. But there are also some great examples of how Artificial Intelligence Computers can also help send mankind leaps and bounds technologically as well! These examples are:

1. Star Trek: The Next Generation:

The USS Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Rather it be the TV show, or the movies that, that crew of that Starship Enterprise are in… Their computer system is an Artificial Intelligence Computer, and although it is true that there has been times in which there computer went on the fritz and tried to kill the crew. For the most part their computer regulates most everything in that crew’s lives! Rather it be from the clothes that they wear during covert operations, to the food they eat, to the weapons they fire, to even the games they play!

Of course they would be able to function with out it, but being that it is a lone crew on a Starship out in the middle of nowhere (literally), it makes their lives so much easier!

For more information on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Please enjoy the trailer for the last movie that, that crew did together, Star Trek: Nemesis (2002):

Another example of this is the movie, A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001): Now this movie is kind of a cute example of a world where Androids are just starting to become more commonplace in the daily life of mankind, one highly advanced android (played by: Haley Joel Osment) endeavor’s to become a real boy so that he can regain the love of his ‘parents’ who have discarded him!

Haley Joel Osment as 'David' in A.I. Artificial Intelligence!

For more information on this movie, please enjoy the trailer for the movie, A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001):

And the last example that I have for you that is another example of the plus points of creating an Artificial Intelligence Computer is admittedly kind of similar to A.I. Artificial Intelligence, but never the less different… That movie being Bicentennial Man

Now Bicentennial Man tells the story of how in the future, mankind has servant androids with limited A.I. capacity that can serve man as Butlers, Teachers, Friends, etc… But one A.I. unit (Played by: Robin Williams) ends up gaining sentience when the family that bought him decide to help give him the chance to be more then he is… This Android ultimately literally goes from being a servant droid to becoming about as close to a human that one can get with out actually being one!

Sir Richard Martin (Played by: Sam Neil) with the android Andrew Martin before he becomes more human looking. In Bicentennial Man!

For more information on this movie, please check out the trailer for the movie, Bicentennial Man (1999):

Now those are just a few examples of how mankind can be both helped or destroyed by the creation of an Aritificial Intelligence computer… Now the answer to that question that I posed in the beginning of this blog, about rather it is good or bad to create an A.I. The only thing I can say is that I am all for Technological advancement, and if A.I. were created with honest intentions and used correctly, then I can see only good coming from it, if not then I would rather skip the invention of A.I. entirely… What do you think?
