Manhunter (1986)

by  |  January 4th, 2011  |  Thriller

Everyone knows about Silence of the Lambs (1991) and its equally great sequels and prequel Hannibal (2001), Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007). But did you know that before Sir Anthony Hopkins played the suave and sophisticated psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter, that there was another one to dawn that mantle?

Thats right kiddies. Before all of these films there was a little gem called Manhunter in which Brian Cox (The Bourne Identity, Doctor Who) dawned the mantle of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Although this time it is spelled Lecktor.)

Will Graham (William Peterson) reluctantly asks Dr. Hannibal (Brian Cox) for help with a case

I actually came to discover this little piece when I happened to be in Amoeba Entertainment looking for something fun to watch in the Silence of the Lambs catagory. When I noticed this I thought that this couldn’t be a Silence of the Lambs movie right? I mean where is the Hannibal Lecter we have all come to know and love?

Well I decided to try this out. Little knowing that this gem was actually the original Red Dragon… Thats right folks. the classic Edward Norton, Ralph Fiennes film we had all grown to love was the remake – Manhunter was actually the original (Not to say that there is anything wrong with the remake of course.)

Written and Directed by Michael Mann and starring William Petersen (To Live and Die in L.A., CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) and Tom Noonan (Heat, The X-Files) Manhunter tells the story of Will Graham (Petersen) who is a former FBI specialist made famous by capturing the crazed Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox) Graham is pulled back in to the field by Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) A friend and former boss at the FBI, when it is discovered that there is a series of brutal serial murders being committed by a serial killer called The Tooth Fairy, which Crawford needs Graham’s help to stop!

With a scene lit like this, you know it's a Michael Mann film.

With time not on his side and fighting his own personal demons, Will Graham must capture the elusive Tooth Fairy before he kills again!

In my opinion, what makes this movie really stand out from the rest of the Hannibal Lecter films is the truly dark and visceral struggle that makes up Graham’s chase to capture the tooth fairy!
