They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… Then is parody the sincerest form of insult? If so, who cares! parodies are awesome! I mean 9 times out of ten the pre 2000s parodies were pretty freaking hilarious, and had amazing casts! (I say the pre-2000s movies, because let’s be honest here… In post 2000s parodies, the cast generally suck, the stories are generally weak, and the comedy is sometimes really disgusting!)
But this parody imbues everything that is awesome in parodies, that being: Hot Shots (1991)!
Starring: Charlie Sheen (Wall Street), Cary Elwes (Saw), Valeria Golino (Escape From L.A.), Lloyd Bridges (High Noon), Kevin Dunn (Transformers) and Jon Cryer (Pretty In Pink).
“My eyes are ceramic. Caught a bazooka round at Little Big Horn. Or was it Okinawa? The one without the Indians.” – A quote from the movie, Hot Shots (1991)
This hilarious parody, which is a parody of quite a few movies (primarily Top Gun), which tells the story of Topper Harley is this over the top former top gun fighter who is one of the best of the best ends up being called back to duty… But with the horrors of the past… And a boat like the SS Essess! And a mission to destroy Saddam’s weapons… Hilarity is sure to ensue!
Now what I like about this movie is this… Ok, so it is supposed to be a parody of Tom Cruise’s (Mission Impossible) classic mid 1980s movie, Top Gun (1986)! But it is so much more, with so many more laughs!
The sad part about this though is that likely if you were born in the 90s or early 2000’s, unless you are a true cinephile, you are likely not to get the references and it will not seem as funny! Still, check it out! It is a fun one and well worth getting in to a classic like that!
