Written by: Laurice Elehwany (The Amazing Panda Adventure) & Directed by: Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). Starring: Anna Chlumsky (Hannibal), Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone) Dan Akyroyd (Christmas With The Cranks) & Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween).
This is an endearing coming of age story about a girl by the name of Vada (Chlumsky)… Along with her friend Thomas (Culkin), her awkard father (Akyroyd), and her new older friend Shelly DeVoto (Curtis), and the summer that would change Vada forever!
You see, everything starts off fine, Vada and her friend Thomas are just playing around like kids do, while her awkward widower father tends to pay more attention to the funeral home that he owns and less time to her.
But that’s fine, because during her summer, she also develops one of her first crushes… One of the fifth grade teachers, Mr. Bixler (Played by: Griffin Dunne) and she has her good buddy, ‘Thomas’ to pal around with!
But with the good stuff, comes the bad, and when her new older friend starts dating her father, Vada’s life will change forever as she starts her journey from being a girl to becoming a woman!
Now the truth is, is I am not really giving this movie enough of the just that it deserves, and you maybe wondering why I (a guy) am recommending a movie about a girls coming of age story… Well there is a bunch of reasons!
1. The cast is absolutely amazing!
2. The story, while being both heartwarming, and endearing, is actually extremely funny, and is a great story that I personally think that every one can enjoy!
And finally, this was one of the last movies I ever saw in the drive-in with my family… It is something that I will never forget, and if you are a mother or a father that is looking for something that the whole family can enjoy, and with a great soundtrack this one is definitely worth checking out, it is fun for the whole family!
