The Evolution of The Original Battlestar Galactica From Original To Remake

by  |  July 29th, 2015  |  Blog

Starbuck as played by: ‘Dirk Bendict’ in the original Battlestar Galactica, and Starbuck played by: Katee Sackhoff in the recent remake of the classic series!

So at this point most people would recognize the awesome remake series/spin off/movies that have been being released over the last 11 years or so… But what most people, it seems like either don’t know, or kind of have vaguely heard of, is that this phenomena initially started out as a TV show back in the 1970s!

That’s right folks, before Katee Sackhoff (Oculus) got her big break playing the role of, ‘Starbuck’ in the remake franchise, or Edward James Olmos (Blade Runner) dawned the uniform for the modern remake series, Lorne Greene (Earthquake), Richard Hatch (The Street Of San Francisco) & Dirk Benedict (The A-Team) to name a few starred in the original series!

I will tell you this, there are definitely certain striking parallels between this series and, ‘Star Trek’… You might even say that Battlestar Galactica is the, ‘B-Movie’ version of, ‘Startrek’!

You could say that, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ is the , ‘B’ version of, ‘Star Trek’… And that rocks!

Don’t get me wrong, both are great series, but I thought you guys might enjoy this evolution from the original series, to the remake series of Battlestar Galactica!

Well, now unlike Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica stayed primarily to the world of, ‘TV’… But never the less, this series like all great series it seems had two things going for it.

First off, this original series got it’s auspicious start the same way as it would appear most of the long term famous sci-fi franchises seem to get there start… That being as a campy-as-hell (but fun,) cheesy TV show in the 1970s. The year of the start of the world of Battlestar Galactica started off in 1978.

Commander Adama (Played by: Lorne Greene), Captain Apollo (Played by: Richard Hatch), Lieutenant Starbuck (Played by: Dirk Benedict), and Athena (Played by: Maren Jensen), on the bridge of the original, ‘Battlestar Galactica’!

Like Star Trek, this series not only had low ratings (the Nielsen ratings system has killed more great TV series, then has actors/crew wanting to dismantle them,) with that in mind though, Battlestar Galactica managed to pull off the equivalent of a full season before it was shelved…

Like all great shows though, they never fully die… And this one wasn’t about to die… You see in 1979, after the collapse of the first show, the studio and Glen A. Larson (the creator of the series,) got together and hashed out a sequel series to the original one that featured the crew of what is left of the Colonial Fleet, making it to Earth and protecting mankind against the Cylon threat!

To launch this new series, a movie was made to precede it called, ‘Galactica 1980’, but this audiences still weren’t ready for it… And so after airing the new series got 10 episodes in to it, the show would be taken off the air again!

The Galactica crew once it makes it to earth!

Now in the intervening years, there has been various movies that had been created for this original series that were based on re-edited episodes from the original series… But other then that, the series had gone off the air for many decades, before it was returned to prominence in the early part of the 2000’s…

Anyway guys, so if you are a fan of the remake series, then why not take on the original series, I do think you will like it!
