Stand By Me (1986)

by  |  June 26th, 2015  |  Drama

If you are a fan of Stephen King then you know that most of Stephen King’s work generally lends itself to horror, science fiction and the sometimes cross over genres in the books that he writes…

Well it turns out that he also has a little bit of a sub genre of the work that is lesser known but for the most part is just as good! ┬áThat is the drama stories that he has written before… A great example is the novella that he did called, ‘Rita Hayworth And The Shawshank Redemption’… Or if you haven’t read it but have seen the movie starring: Tim Robbins (The Hudsucker Proxy) & Morgan Freeman (Along Came A Spider) then just simply, The Shawshank Redemption (1994)!

The reason that I mention this is that my father (who kind of helped guide me to enjoy the works of Stephen King in general), and I sat down some time in roughly about the very early 1990s to watch Stand By Me! (Sadly being that this was the first time I ever saw a River Phoenix movie (a great actor by the way), it was a little anticlimactic, because not long after I saw this movie for the first time I had come to discover that River Phoenix had passed away!

Now you might be wondering why I am recommending this movie, and I could tell you a whole bunch of reasons for it, It has a great cast, which it does, I mean it has a cast that beside River Phoenix (My Own Private Idaho) also includes: Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), Jerry O’Connell (Sliders), Kiefer Sutherland (Dark City), Casey Siemaszko (Back To The Future), Bradley Gregg (A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors), Marshal Bell (A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge) and last but certainly not least, Richard Dreyfuss (What About Bob)!

You know I can also tell you that this movie has an amazing coming of age story about a group of boys from a small Oregon town that are friends who ultimately find themselves and start on the journey to becoming the men they will ultimately become and the adventure that will tie these four friends together for the rest of their lives…

Four friends on the adventure of a life time!

You see one day Vern (O’Connell) discovers that there is a dead body of a missing teen in the woods and after bringing this to his friends, the four of them end up going on a journey to find this dead body, but in the end, during their adventure to try and find this dead teen, they find out who they really are, who they are working to become, and that some times the ties of friendship can last a life time!

Now I could tell you that this awesome story is what made this movie so awesome for me (it is one of them).

In the end though, I had the opportunity to see this movie in my formative years with my Dad, and even though that movie wasn’t a Stephen King horror extravaganza, and even though it literally was just a movie, some of the better moments I have had hanging out with my Dad was sitting down to a great film, and this certainly was a great film, and if you have a young son, and are looking for a fun moment to enjoy with him, then you might want to heat up some popcorn and try this movie out for size… You might end up liking it!

So please enjoy this trailer for the movie… As well as the music video, ‘Stand By Me’ by the original singer of the song, ‘Ben E. King’ as well as actor’s, River Phoenix, (who played: Chris Chambers in the movie,) & Wil Wheaton (Who played: Gordie Lechance) in the movie as well!)
