Each successive decade I have come to realize has its own trend when it comes to movies (and at some point it recirculates…)
A great example of this is the fact that in the 1980s a majorly successful genre was horror… And more specifically, ‘Slasher’ films… In the 1990s it was more action movies then anything, and in the 1970s a real big trend in film was exploitation/grindhouse movies!
And speaking of the, ‘Grindhouse/Exploitation’ movie craze, there was one particular filmmaker that not only thrived during that time (still does today), but who also helped get a decent amount of the Hollywood A-List of the following years, there start… That player, we all know him, and we love his work, the myth, the man, the legend, Roger Corman (Queen Of Blood)!
Now you might be wondering why I mention all of this… Well during the height of the 80s, ‘Sword and Sorcery style fantasy movie craze’, Roger Corman followed on the coat tails of the commercial success of the, ‘Conan’ series with his own variation on the basic theme starting with, Deathstalker (1983)!
Written by; Howard R. Cohen (Saturday The 14th) & Directed by: James Sbardellati (Frailty). Starring: Rick Hill (Liar Liar), Barbi Benton (Hee Haw), Lana Clarkson (Scarface) & Bernard Erhard (Firefox).
Now I could tell you that this story for this movie is the best part of the movie… I could… But then I would be lying, the truth is, is the story is pretty solid, but like all awesome b movies they are filled with cheesy lines that just make these types of movies more enjoyable!
I could also go ahead and say that the special effect were truly awesome… Again, if I did I would be lying… The truth is, is this movie had a strange hodgepodge of some truly stellar special effects, and very low quality special effects…
I could even go so far as to say that the acting was truly something else… I could say all these things and so much more, (as far the acting goes, it was awesome but not, ‘wow factor’ awesome.)
The truth is, is I could tell you how all of that and so much more were truly amazing… And that would be the truth!
You see, considering that this movie was made during the time period when the Philipine B Movie craze was dying down, and considering the small budget they had for this movie, I think they did exceedingly well with all of the elements that make up a truly, ‘Awesome B Movie’.
This movie which told the story of, ‘Deathstalker’ (Hill), a Warrior who will kill just about anyone or thing to get what he wants, ends up getting sent on a mission by this old hag witch to go to the kingdom controlled by: ‘Munkar’ (Erhard), who is an evil wizard that has taken control of the kingdom that he runs by force!
Now here is something interesting, a sort of good versus evil setup, you see Deathstalker is heading out to Munkar’s kingdom under the disguse of going to his court to fight in a contest that is supposed to be that if he wins, will become Munkar’s heir… But in reality the contest was designed by Munkar because he is trying to get rid of all the Warriors as far as the eye can see, (including killing off, ‘Deathstalker’,) and gaining control of a sword (which Deathstalker has).
Now this sword, along with a magical chalice and pendant are pretty much the power of the universe and whoever has all 3 has control of the Universe… And where as Munkar only wants these for evil purposes… And it seemed like Deathstalker initially only seemed to want that as well for himself…
On his mission to stop Munkar and gain the magical relics, Deathstalker will have to fight a true battle of good versus evil, as he finds his soul, and tries to stop Munkar with all his heart and new found sole!
In the end, this movie is a truly fun movie, and if you get a chance to try it out, you might find the same thing as well!
