This week sees the release of director Dennis Lee’s ‘Jesus Henry Christ’ to Blu-ray DVD. Based on a short film that he wrote and directed back in 2003, Lee skillfully weaves a compelling story filled with quirky characters in ’Jesus Henry Christ’.
The story centers around Henry James Herman, a young boy conceived by way of artificial insemination, and his quest for the truth. Henry wants answers. Like who his father is? Why his father was a sperm donar? Etc.
It is when Henry discovers his father is Dr. Slavkin O’Hara (played by Michael Sheen, TRON: Legacy) that the story really starts. As the story progresses, Henry must bring his mother and Dr. O’Hara together in a series of unforgettable encounters. Only to discover that he also has a sister.
In the tradition of “Quirky Indie Comedies” Jesus Henry Christ is one part Rushmore, 2 parts Squid and the Whale with a dash of Thumbsucker and a pinch of Little Miss Sunshine thrown in for good measure. In fact so much so, Toni Collette who played the mom in Little Miss Sunshine, also plays the mom in Jesus Henry Christ. And if you enjoyed Toni Collette’s performances in About A Boy and The Sixth Sense, as the weird misfit kids mother, we’re certain you’ll enjoy her performance as the weird misfit test tube kid’s single, feminist mother, Patricia!
