Man’s Best Friend (1993)

by  |  March 21st, 2012  |  Horror

Written and Directed by: John Lafia (Dark Justice), and starring: Ally Sheedy (War Games), Lance Henriksen (Mansion Of The Doomed), Robert Costanzo (Dick Tracy), Fredric Lehne (Con Air), John Cassini (The Game) and J.D. Daniels (The Mighty Ducks).

There is a a reason why dogs are considered to be ‘man’s best friend’, their loyal, their dependable, they will love and protect you like a brother or a sister would help protect you! They make both great guard dogs, and great guide dogs! Ultimately most of the times dogs are oft times great friends of their owners!

Max is not that type of Dog…  You see Max is a dog that has grown up in a lab, he has been genetically altered so that he has the best of almost all the worlds!  He is stronger, can see farther, and run faster! He can climb trees, and he is the smartest animal in the animal kingdom! Thus he was engineered by Dr. Jarret (Henriksen) to be the best guard dog a dog can be… The only problem is that to keep Max in control, he needs to remain drugged so that his darker more brutal tendencies can be kept under control!

Now a Doctor that works for Jarret by the name of Judy Sanders (Played by: Robin Frates),  has decided to expose the inhuman work that Dr. Jarret and his team at ‘E Max’ are doing to animals! (Including cutting off various body parts of animals to the point where there is a monkey with his brain exposed!)

The way she does so is that she gets in contact with a fashion reporter who is trying to get out of the fashion world and in to real journalism, by the name of, ‘Lori Tanner’ (Sheedy). Now Tanner is already working on the story when Judy decides to get in contact with her…

Lori (Sheedy) with Max after getting Max home from the lab!

Both Judy and Lori decide to meet that evening, but when Lori and her videographer show up, Judy is no where to be found, so Lori and her videographer decide to break in to the facility and get as much video as they can! Now as Lori and her videographer are heading through the freak show that is, ‘E Max’, they come across, ‘Max’.

Now after Lori and her videographer get caught and try to escape, Max decides to help them and the 3 of them escape! The only problem is, is that Lori (who is quickly becoming attached to Max, and to whom Max is falling for as well), is an unstable killing machine who is only remaining sane because of the drug that Dr. Jarret gave him, and if Jarret doesn’t find his dog soon, that unstable killing machine will quickly turn on his new friend and cause mayhem for everyone around her!

Man’s Best Friend could be said to be a great reason to use ‘cruelty free’ products, just because of the cruelty seen in this movie, and the mayhem suffered by everyone around the genetically engineering dog, ‘Max’.

The last thing that I thought that I would say about this movie is that one of the most famous horror movie special FX artists in the world, Kevin Yagher (A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge) created the, ‘Max’ puppets and did the special make up effects for, Man’s Best Friend as well!

So if your looking for a fun horror movie to really, ‘sink your teeth’ in to, then I recommend this one, it is a fun one!
