Machete Maiden’s Unleashed (2010)

by  |  March 8th, 2012  |  Documentary

In the 90s a cheap area of the world to make movies and TV shows and the like was to film in Canada… As a matter of fact, more then a few TV series were filmed there, including, The X-Files, Stargate SG 1, etc.  But in the 50s 60s 70s etc… The place to be to make a movie cheaply was in the Philippine Islands! As a matter of fact more then a few classic exploitation movies were made there!

Through archival footage, interviews with Filipino filmmakers, historians, and some of hollywood’s leading independent actors/actresses and other filmmakers, including: Roger Corman (Queen Of Blood), Pam Grier (Bucktown), Sid Haig (THX 1138), Gloria Hendry (Black Belt Jones),  Jack Hill (Coffy), John Ashley (Beach Blanket Bingo), Cirio H. Santiago (TNT Jackson), Eddie Romero (Savage Sisters)… to name just a few of the truly amazing talent in this documentary…

Anyway what Machete Maiden’s Unleashed documents is more or less the history of Filipino cinema from the time when people like Hemisphere Pictures was making failing war movies, to when they started making some truly awesome campy B monsters movies like, Brides Of Blood (1968) etc…

All the way through when Roger Corman kind of came in to the scene and started making exploitation movies of all sorts, including sexploitation, blaxploitation, woman in prison movies etc, as part of the golden age of the exploitation film run in the 60s, 70s and 80s…

A still from,. 'The Big Doll House' involving Pam Grier.

There is also sometime in which Apocalypse Now (1979) is discussed (this is during the time in which filming American exploitation films in the the Philippines was on its downward spiral.

The documentary also discusses sort of the end of the American exploitation movie being filmmed in the Philippine Islands, due to the changing of the times etc…

Now what I personally like about this documentary and what I do think makes this probably one of my favorite documentaries that I have seen to date, about Hollywood and the movies:

1. At this point I can happily admit that I have seen quite a few exploitation movies (alot of them are mentioned on this site), but watching this movie I have come to discover a new plethora of Exploitation movies to enjoy!

2. Another thing that I found to be rather fascinating is the talent they got for this documentary! I mean it seems like they got a descent sized portion of the greats of the exploitation movie market!

3. I thought that you guys might find this interesting, but it turns out that this documentary had originally been intended as a documentary for Australian TV!

Anyway folks, if you’re an Exploitation/Grindhouse movie fan, then I highly recommend this one… It rocks!
