Now I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Romance movies in general… I suppose I have become more of one as I have gotten older, and have begun to realize that Romance movies are not just tales of the same 3 people crying about having the same sickness and about lost love… There is that element as well.
Since I have been able to kind of dive deeper in to the movie realm then I ever thought I would I have come to find that even the variety of Romance movies out there have everything from intrigue, to betrayal, and even death! With that in mind. What you might call a sub-genre of Romance movies that I have come to find to be rather fascinating, is what I guess you might call ‘Betrayal Romance Movies’.
What I mean by that is movies that have to do in some way with a couple betraying each other, cheating on each other etc… Especially when it comes to betraying some one with a person from their past… All of these elements are wonderfully shown in, Last Night (2010):
Written and Directed by: Massey Tadjedin (The Jacket). Starring Keira Knightly (Pirates Of The Caribbean), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Eva Mendes (The Other Guys), Gilaume Canet (The Players) and Daniel Eric Gold (War Of The Worlds).
Last Night is a movie that has to do with the choices that people make and how they will effect themselves, and the people they have pledged to be married to!
What I mean by this is that in the movie, Joanna (Knightley), and Michael (Worthington) are a contentedly married couple… Joanna is a writer who as of late is free lance writing Fashion articles for various magazines, and Michael works in commercial real estate…
Now at the start of the movie, Michael and Joanna head off to a party where both Joanna and Michael end up splitting off and for the most part talking with other people for the whole night… The only problem is that it looks like Michael has been spending his whole night talking with Laura (Mendes), a friend and co-worker of Michael’s… And don’t think that Joanna hasn’t noticed!
After the party and when they get home, both Michael and Joanna have a huge fight over this, and the jealousy that Joanna seems to have for how close Michael and Laura seem to be! Well in the morning Michael and Joanna make up just before Michael, Andy (Gold) and Laura have to go to Philadelphia to meet with an investor for one of Michael’s latest projects…
After Michael leaves Joanna goes down to local coffee shop for a coffee and meets an old flame by the name of Alex (Canet). They decide to meet later that evening.
Now with Michael out of town with a woman he is clearly attracted to, and with Joanna meeting for dinner an old flame, it will be up to both Michael and Joanna to keep their time with the other people that they are clearly attracted to on a platonic level, or else they could end up loosing the one person that both Michael and Joanna truly love… Each other!
Now what I liked about this movie and what I do think makes this an amazing B movie is a couple of things:
1. Obviously the story was a lot of fun, and the movie was well acted.
2. I also liked the sort of art house feel that this movie seemed to have.
Well folks, if you are looking for a fun Romantic movie to really get in to, then I recommend Last Night… It is a fun one!
