Growing up, I watched a lot of classic films… Movies from all genres, rather they be Double Impact (1991) with Jean Claude Van Damme (Universal Soldier), National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) with Chevy Chase (Fletch) or Anthony Perkins in Psycho (1960), or heck, even Them! (1954) with James Whitmore (Face Of Fire)
With that said, one of the very few genre's (or rather sub-genres) that I have not had much of an opportunity to see, are Biker movies… (A mistake that I am currently working on rectifying.)
The reason that I say that not having watched many biker movies is a mistake that intend to rectify, is because Biker movies are great! They seem to be very well made, with usually a great cast, and often times there are usually very well known actors and or actresses in them (such is the case with movies such as Chrome And Hot Leather (1971) with Marvin Gaye (The Ballad of Andy Crocker) and Cheryll Ladd (Las Vegas) or Easy Rider (1969) with Peter Fonda (Race With The Devil).
There are many other reasons why Biker movies are great, and why I intend to watch more of them, but I thought that I would mention the one's I mentioned above and let you guys know that all that I mentioned above, The Glory Stompers also has in spades!
Written by: James Gordon White (The Tormentors) and John Lawrence (The Incredible Two Headed Transplant). Directed by: Anthony M. Lanza (The Irv Carlson Show), and starring Dennis Hopper (Queen Of Blood), Jock Mahoney (Marine Battleground), Jody McCrea (Nightmare County), Chris Noel (Cease Fire), Robert Tessier (The Deep).
The Glory Stompers tells the story of a biker by the name of Darryl (McCrea)…
Now you see Darryl is a biker who belongs to the biker gang called, 'The Glory Stompers' (don't let the name fool you, through out most of the movie it really is Darryl, and eventually a few other people.) In the beginning of the movie Darryl's life is going pretty great! I mean he has a girl that he loves (That is apparently not a 'mother'. A term that is never fully explained in the movie.) Irregardless, Darryl also belongs to a great biker gang, everything seems to be going great for ole Darryl, that is till Chino (Hopper) and the 'Black Souls' crash a party for Darryl's chapter
of 'The Glory Stompers'…
Now the 'Black Souls' are a smaller Biker gang, that are more your typical Biker Gang that are out to have a good time, no matter what the consequences are to anyone else… As opposed to The Glory Stompers who are significantly larger, and mostly just wanna party, have fun, and enjoy the last vestiges of the free love movement of the 1960s!
With that said, Chino and the Black Souls show up to the Stompers party, and at first everything seems to be going quite nicely. until Chino notices Darryl's girlfriend Chris (Noel) standing in the crowd…
Well of course Chino being the Socio-path that he is, decides to hassle her; That is till Darryl notices anyway…
You see when Darryl notices, he heads over to where the Black Souls and Chino are, and confronts Chino about the scene, which ultimately chases Chino and the Black Souls away…
Now later on though, Chris and Darryl take off on Darryl's motorcycles, and head off to a secluded wooded clearing, so that they could talk. During their conversation though, Chino and the Black Souls show up!
You see, Chino and his gang had not been to happy to be chased away from that party. So when Chino and his crew saw Darryl and Chris motor past them on his motorcycle. Chino and his crew decided to chase after them.
Anyway, when they get to the clearing and notice that Chris and Darryl are talking. Chino decides that he and his crew were gonna harass them, and beat the crap out of Darryl (All great plans, eh?) What I mean by this is that while his gang is beating up Darryl and restraining Chris. They end up beating him up so badly that they freak out, thinking that Darryl is dead, and decide to take Chris (and eventually sell her in to slavery) and head down to Mexico, before the authorities can catch up with them!
With that said, and when Darryl wakes up, it will be up to him, and a small group of current and former members of 'The Glory Stompers' to find Chris and stop the 'Black Souls' before they can get to Mexico to sell Chris in to slavery for seed money!
With that said, what I like about this movie and what I thought made this a truly awesome b movie is a couple of things.
1. Besides what I mentioned above, I thought that I would also mention here that while doing some research on the movie, I came to discover that this movie actually turned out to be one of the movies selected by Quentin Tarantino (From Dusk Till Dawn) himself as part of the first Quentin Tarantino Film Festival, back in 1996!
2. Also check out a young Casey Kasem in this movie, playing the role of 'Mouth' in this movie!
With that said folks, if your looking for a fun biker movie to watch, then I do recommend this one, it is a great one!
