When you were a kid, do you remember playing Cops and Robbers? What about Cowboys and Indians? Or maybe you remember playing house? Or Doctor? with your friends? If so then you were like the millions of kids out there still fantasizing that they are a Cop chasing the bad bank robber, or an Astronaut that is getting ready for lift off!
With that said, as time goes on people grow up and playing Astronaut or what have you gets less and less interesting, until when you are a teen, (if your a boy) until one's interest gets sucked up between girls/video games/and friends (and if you are a girl, ballet classes, boys, friends and what ever else teenaged girls are interested in.) Or till eventually your time is surrounded by more adult interests…
With that said, for me, when I was a young kid, it was more about playing games like Street Fighter, (basically, extremely violent games, that usually ended up with all of us having beaten the hell out of each other!) Now, as I got older, and getting beaten up, and beating up others got less and less entertaining. I started getting more in to games such as Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, etc…
Now these games were great! I mean you could imagine yourself to be all sorts and kinds of species, such as Orcs, Knights, Dwarfs or my personal favorite, Elves! You could imagine yourself to be on some sort of mythical quest to save the world, or just on a quest to save the damsel in distress! There was so many possibilities of things that you could do when playing these myth and legend style games!
During this time though that I was getting really in to playing these games with my friends, there was another side to all of this that I was also beginning to discover, and that is the movie side of it… What do I mean by this?
Well up to this point, I was still mostly watching Cartoons, Action movies and Horror movies. So it was with great joy that I began to discover such films as Ladyhawke (1985), Willow (1988), etc… Or books like J.R.R. Tolkien's original Lord Of The Ring Series! And got to see all of these mythological creatures, more or less in real life! What a treat that was!
With that said, like the saying goes, “when I was a child, I played with childish things. Now that I am an
adult, I have put away childish things.” What I mean by that is that, now that I am an adult, married, etc… I no longer play games like Magic: The Gathering, or Dungeons and Dragons, etc… Honestly I don't really have much interest in those types of games anymore anyway, (That is not to say that these are bad games or anything, I am just more in the mood for other things.) At best I usually play about an hour a month of Video games at this point…
Now with all that in mind, and still being a strong fan of films in general, and since the launch of Awesomebmovies.com, I have been getting in to (0r in the case of Fantasy movies, back in to) such great film genre's that I had completely forgotten about, like the Fantasy film genre!
Now I never completely lost interest in Fantasy films, I mean like probably a large portion of planet Earth, I also did, Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings series. But those films had a different flare for me, I didn't really begin getting back in to the Fantasy film genre till after the launch of Awesomebmovies.com, and I began to discover, and in the case of movies like Willow, re-discover some truly awesome films!
And speaking of these classic Fantasy movies, the first Fantasy film recommendation that I wrote since ABM's launch was for the movie Willow! Now Willow was one of those movies that I first watched when I was a kid, and I loved it then! But I hadn't watched it literally in over a decade, before I wrote the recommendation for the movie here a few months ago.
Now I did end up watching the movie again here a few months ago… And I got say that this movie brought on a whole new meaning for me! This movie reminded me of those times, when I was 11 or 12 and I did play games like, Dungeon's and Dragons, or even pogs! (Remember those?) or even a little bit later when Magic: The Gathering became a popular game, with my friends! And a lot of these other types of fantasy movies have been like that for me to!
I'm not gonna go see if I can dig out my old Magic: The Gathering deck and try and strike up a game or anything, but it is fun to sometimes be reminded of those fun times!
I guess what I am saying is that, although it is true that just about any genre of movies, or movies themselves, can help to remind people of the fond memories of childhood, but for those of us out there that really enjoyed games like Magic, Pogs, D&D or other such types of games, watching these completely awesome, classic Fantasy movies, can be a walk down memory lane and back to those times!
