It’s news like this that warms the cockles of our hearts! Seeing an Awesome B movie get the treatment it deserves…

So apparently the ‘Criterion Collection’ is releasing C.H.U.D. (aka Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller) onto Bluray in July 2011! C.H.U.D. (1984) stars of course Daniel Stern (The Wonder Years/Home Alone) and John Heard (Cat People/Home Alone) under the direction of Douglas Cheek (Editor of Alien Autopsy).

  • New digital restoration of the unrated director’s cut, including “excessively violent” shots cut from the theatrical release to avoid an X rating, with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
  • Optional soundtrack dubbed in the guttural language of C.H.U.D. (DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition)
  • Two audio commentaries, one by director Douglas Cheek and one by filmmaker Pedro Costa
  • Visual essay by Tag Gallagher
  • Morning in Underground America, a feature documentary about the making of C.H.U.D.
  • The Humanoid and the Professor, a conversation with Kent Jones
  • Film-to-storyboard comparison
  • Downloadable MP3 of the 1987 radio dramatization, featuring Eric Bogosian
  • Theatrical and teaser trailers
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring new essays by film writers J. Hoberman and Dennis Lim, a reprint of the manifesto Cheek issued on the film’s release, and sheet music for the original score

I knew this was joke the moment it was announced, but I have to admire the effort you went to – the cover image actually looks exactly like a Criterion release for this film would.

And good going picking a subtle option….if it’d been Troll 2 no one would go for it, but C.H.U.D. is well known enough that, bad or no, people might question it’s legitimacy. “Is this a long lost social criticism?”

And damn, I’d love the sheet music for this…what is it:

-Purchase Kawai keyboard circa 1980 model
    -Press kick drum
    -Press snare drum
    – Repetitively hit C# at the highest octave

Honestly, we thought it was an April Fool’s joke immediately. But, we LOVED the idea SO much we went for it. For the record we have not read anything from Criterion stating that this is in fact an April Fool’s joke as yet.

So we are leaving it up to let the gang at Criterion know there’s a whole community hungry for some good horror/camp films worthy of the Criterion treatment too.

We have been flooded with emails from people that would love this film through Criterion, and we can only hope that Criterion has been getting the same emails demanding C.H.U.D. on a special Criterion release.

Of course it goes without saying, we love Criterion too!
