THX 1138 (1971)

by  |  January 12th, 2011  |  Sci Fi

When I first got married one of the things that my wife and I would do is to stay in and watch a movie. One of these movies was the hardly known movie THX 1138!

THX 1138? Whats that you might ask. THX 1138 is a truly great movie about the problems that can come from a society that is rigidly regulated by technology, where your mood and life style are regulated by the drugs that you take. This movie was shot beautifully giving you the entirely sterile atmosphere that takes place in the city!

Written and Directed by George Lucas (American Graffiti) and starring Robert Duvall (God Father) Donald Pleasence (Halloween) Don Pedro Colley (Beneath the Planet of the Apes) and Maggie McOmie (Grand Junction) THX 1138 tells the story of a man that goes by the designation of THX 1138 (Duvall), a man who lives in a society that is rigidly controlled by the computers. Where your mood and attitude are regulated by the drugs that you take. Where if you don’t fit in to the scheme of the society,  you are taken to a large white room that is basically the equivalent of Purgatory!

At one point THX 1138 decides to ween himself off of the drugs that he takes, and this is where the fun begins! THX 1138 looses his job. His wife (McOmie) is re-assigned to SEN 5241 (Pleasence) Ultimately he ends up in the Purgatorial White Room!

Along the way for this ride is an adventurous hologram by the name of SRT(Colley) and SEN 5241 who ultimately ends up getting sent to the White Room as well for his revolutionary ambitions.

With SEN 5241 and SRT.  THX 1138 hatches a plan to escape their prison and ultimately a way to the promise land, what ever that maybe!

Little did I know when seeing this, is that not only was this George Lucas’s first film, but that it was also adapted from a short film that he made while in film school!

What truly makes this an awesome B movie you might be asking… Is the imagery of a society devoid of humanity, and the struggle that some people have to make to regain that humanity!

If your in the mood for a fun easy movie to sit back and watch, then I think that you might want to check out THX 1138!
