The Noah’s Ark Principal (1984)

by  |  January 19th, 2011  |  Sci Fi

Have you ever had a find that you just had to pick up? If you’re a music fan, it could be a signed album from Nirvana, a book fan, it could be a first edition of Yates. Well for me being a movie fan, that was The Noah’s Ark Principal.

What makes the Noah’s Ark Principal so great you might be asking. Well besides the fact that it is legendary filmmaker, Roland Emmerich’s thesis project, it also happens to be a truly awesome B movie!

Now you might be asking yourself at this point, Roland Emmerich? Really? How in gods name did this guy get Roland Emmerich’s thesis project? Well the answer, is that Roland Emmerich when he was in film school in West Germany in the 80’s had managed to pull in so much money and make such a great film that he was ultimately able to sell it both nationally and internationally! One of those countries obviously being the US!

Originally titled Das Arche Noah Prinzip(The Noah’s Ark Principal in German) was written and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day & The Patriot) and starring Richy Müller (Treasure Island) and Franz Buchrieser. This movie tells the story of Billy Hayes and Max Marek. Two astronauts that are stationed on an extremely advanced Sciene Station that orbits the earth.

One of the great things about this station is it’s ability to predict the weather. Now when an emerging crisis on earth happens, Billy(Müller) and Max(Buchrieser) are asked to irradiate a portion of the Indian Ocean as well as the Persian Gulf!

With war emerging on earth, the government’s that own the science station are trying what ever they can to make sure that they turn that quiet little science station in to a platform for the ultimate Weapon of Mass destruction… The Weather!

Now it is a race against time as the two astronauts battle each other and the people who hired them to run the station before it has a chance to be used for regular Military application!

If I haven’t sold you on why this movie is a totally awesome film yet. Then let me tell you this… The reason that I think this is totally an awesome B movie is for many reasons.

1. Considering that this is a student film, I found this movie to be visually stunning.

2. The film is very well shot cinematically.

3. And considering the fact that this movie was a thesis project, the movie and its story still hold to the test of time!

Check it out! I think you might really like it!
