Recently I was talking with my good buddy and fellow ABMer Matthew Dowling about some good movies to check out. Matt recommended I check out The Mechanic (1972), while I recommended he check out The Italian Job… the Michael Caine version obviously. Only now, am I realizing that Jason Statham is in the remake of both these films… what does it mean?
So with Matt’s glowing recommendation, and the fact that the remake with Jason Statham is coming out in a couple of weeks. I decided I better get on the ball and watch it!
So on one of my runs to pick up movies I decided to see if I could find it… Well as luck would have it, the last copy happened to be sitting on the shelves, ripe for the plucking!
Unfortunately though I couldn’t get to it right away, so after sitting on it for a couple of weeks I decided to sit down to watch it, and I gotta say that I’m glad I did decide to get to it!
This movie was great! It was action packed, full of suspense and betrayal! Something every great gritty action movie should have!
Written by Lewis John Carlino (Crazy Joe) and Directed by Michael Winner (The Sentinel) and starring Charles Bronson (The Great Escape) and Jan Michael Vincent (Damnation Alley.)
The Mechanic is the story of aging hit man Arthur Bishop (Bronson) who decides to take on the son of one of his kills as a protege. He decides to train this guy in his craft…
One day Bishop is called to his employers estate for his latest mark and to discuss why Bishop has taken on a partner. When Bishop gets back he comes to discover after trying to locate his partner, that his student, the guy he trusted to be his partner was actually the guy that was meant to kill him!
Now with a trip to Italy to take out one guy and his own partner contracted to kill him. It is a race against time to finish his latest contract killing and fix his partner before his partner fixes him!
I didn’t know this till I was doing a little bit of research on this movie when I came to discover that Michael Winner and Charles Bronson had worked together on more films! They would end up working at least a few times with each other when Michael Winner would go on to direct Charles Bronson in ‘Death Wish’ I, II & III!
I gotta say that I had alot of fun watching this movie and If you get the chance to check it out, I would recommend doing so as you might find this to be a fun one!
And just in case you’re really ambitious, I included the trailer for ‘The Mechanic’… (gulp) remake, starring Jason Statham and Ben Foster…
