Are you having trouble getting a major network to pick up your new TV series? Well, you’re not alone. Back in 1999 Ben Stiller directed the pilot episode for the new sitcom Heat Vision and Jack. The sitcom was intended to be a spoof of the action TV shows of the 80’s. I know we don’t usually do TV stuff, but every now and again you just have to make exceptions, and this is one worth mentioning.
Stiller brought actors, Jack Black, Christine Taylor (Stiller’s real life wife), Justin Theroux and Owen Wilson (as the voice of Heat Vision, Jacks sidekick and motorcycle) and Ron Silver as… himself/villain. The show was made, but never got picked up by FOX or even aired.
Look for an intro where Stiller brags about his Emmy win for his short lived TV series on FOX, The Ben Stiller Show. Also, takes a playful jab at George Lucas. Of course Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Owen Wilson would go on to take over the comedy genre at the box office with Meet the Parents, Zoolander and Tropic Thunder (written by Justin Theroux and Ben Stiller).
I’ve spared no expense and have searched the globe with great danger to myself just to bring you, possibly for the first time ever, this lost pilot. Next time your show doesn’t get picked up, or you can’t get “so-and-so” to read your script, remember you’re in good company. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen… I now give you Heat Vision and Jack!
