About a week ago I was contacted through my website by a representative from Nokia. The email asked if I would be interested in using the new Nokia N8 phone to make a 90 second short film. My first thought was this is spam…
So I responded, and I was invited to make a 90 second short with a theme to “Alternative Reality” to coincide with Disney’s TRON: Legacy. I would get to go to the premiere of the movie and get my hands on a new gadget to mess around with. Also, as a bonus a handful of the shorts would be selected to play at the Nokia Theater before the movie. One last catch, we would have 72 hours to pull it all off…
So I agreed, this sounded very interesting and creatively challenging. I got my “package” on Friday afternoon (technically giving me 48 hrs). In it was the Nokia N8 phone, a tiny tripod, and other miscellaneous gear. Also, on the phone was a trailer for Tron: Legacy for me to watch and get inspired. There was an envelope and instructions in it. It was all very clandestine and “need to know basis”. Very cool, to be honest. Like when Neo gets his phone in the office and it rings, and Morpheus is like, “Duck”!
Anyway, so I mess around with the phone, learn it and all that. Quite simple and user friendly. One amazing feature of the Nokia N8 is it has HD video capture, comes loaded up with some editing software one the phone too! As an aside the file format is finally in a very usable MP4 format. All others take note… a very friendly and usable MP4 file format. For more on the Nokia N8 go to NokiaUSA.com
Now my first thought for this project was, “assemble the team, get the green screen ready we need pyrotechnics!” But honestly, I really wanted to show what this little baby can do, and actually try to compose a nice classy and more elegant film. I know! Very unusual for me!? So I toned my concept down a bit. Saturday I filmed the short then went to work (as in my job). Sunday was all about the editing and submitting the film. That should tell you how easy all this was.
Tuesday, Candace and I went to the TRON: Legacy (read my recommend here) premiere at the Nokia Theater. Once we got there the Nokia lounge had been converted to resemble a set from Tron itself! There was a lot of really cool stuff to open up the mood. They had a Tron Light Cycle on display, giant light sticks, a photo booth where they took your picture using a Nokia N8, and zapped it over to a printer via WiFi, then printed it out on some nice quality photo paper. Along with the open bar and appetizers it was a rather pleasant experience all around.
One other thing, they featured my short film along with the work of fellow film makers Bryan Villarin, Jeb Brilliant and Luke Guidici to showcase the Nokia N8 and what it’s capabilities are. What’s the tie in? Well in Tron: Legacy, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), uses the Nokia N8 quite frequently to pull off some pretty elaborate capers. So now you know how this all connects… the phone used in TRON: Legacy is the NOKIA N8.
About my film. After watching the trailer for Tron Legacy, I was in fact inspired. The theme in Tron is father and son. For my film I wanted to explore the bond between mother and son. I felt it would restore a little balance in favor of those gorgeous and amazing creatures we all call mom! True, I was also excited to have my son play a younger version of me too. I was pleased at the response my short got and how it was received. I was told that it evoked an emotional response. And isn’t that what it’s all about?
Now I give you, My Alternative Reality… in 90 seconds, filmed entirely on the Nokia N8!
Alright, now go call your mother and tell her how lucky you are to have her and that you love her!
