As a kid growing up in Hollywood I lived close to some of the most famous movie theatres on the planet. One of the things I used to like doing either with a group of friends, or by myself, was to go down to Grauman’s Chinese theatre (A theatre that’s premiered some of the biggest movies ever made).
One film that I saw on one of these Saturday afternoon outings was From Dusk till Dawn. A fun film starring George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino and Fred “The Hammer” Williamson (The Inglorious Bastards and The Bronx Warriors.)
One of the more interesting elements of From Dusk till Dawn is it’s ability to combine both the action and the horror genres so effortlessly. An excellent example of this is the use of small arms fire and hand-to-hand combat during the fight scenes with the Vampires!
Written by Robert Kurtzman and directed by Robert Rodriguez the story focuses on the Fuller family: a disgraced preacher (played by Harvey Keitel) and his children who are making their way down to Mexico on vacation when they run in to the Gecko Brothers (Tarantino & Clooney.) A couple of out laws on the run from the law & also trying to make it down to Mexico! After hijaking the Fuller Family RV & taking them hostage, they all set off on a journey that would lead them ultimately to a truely spectacular battle between goodish… and evil!
Also along for the ride are Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo (both reteamed with Robert Rodriguez for Machete, 2010), actor and special effects master Tom Savini (Dawn of the Dead, 1978) and exploitation star Fred “The Hammer” Williamson, who’s been supportive of AwesomeBMovies.com in the past. These four icons, under Rodriguez’s direction turn in fun performances making them nice addition’s this ensemble!
What I didn’t know at the time that I had seen this is that this movie would not be the first time that Quentin Tarantino and Harvey Keitel would be in the same movie together. I found out a few months after seeing this that both of them would also star in a highly celebrated, truly Awesome B Movie… Reservoir Dogs with the late Chris Penn, Tim Roth & Steve Buscemi!
All in all from the beginning when the Gecko Brothers are hiding by the cold case in a liquor store from the local sheriff. To the final battle, From Dusk till Dawn is a fun action packed great horror movie that is worth your time!
