Someone is killing off the surfer population of Malibu beach! Now it’s up to Chicklet, Kanaka, Starcat, Yo Yo, Cookie and the rest of the gang to get to the bottom of these events! What a great idea for a movie! Personally, I think it would have been great if Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello did the audio commentary for the DVD…
I’m not sure if it’s the way it’s filmed, the clever script (by Charles Busch) packed with sexual innuendo’s, or the genre it’s spoofing, but there’s a certain genius at work in “Psycho Beach Party” to be sure. This campy spoof goes after those great Beach Blanket Bingo and Gidget films of the ’60’s. Yet still maintains a nice balance of being the very movie it’s parodying.
A fun cast of TV actors probably on hiatus at the time, includes Lauren Ambrose (6ft Under), Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds) and Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), deliver over the top performances in Psycho Beach Party. It’s murder, mystery, death, teenage rebellion, and mayhem in this madcap send up of the 60’s beach genre.

Nick Cornish, Andrew Levitas, Nicholas Brendon & Thomas Gibson
I did get to see this film on the big screen at the Laemmle’s Sunset 5. Sadly, this film hasn’t seemed to make the rounds on cable, because it’s so much fun and perfect late night fare. Though I did see play on TV once. Psycho Beach Party cost $1,500,000. to make, and earned $21,359. on the meager 7 screens it was released on. What I am trying to say is this, if WE don’t support these types of films and the film makers, then they will stop making fun cinematic experiences like this.
As an aside, when I was just playing the trailer for Psycho Beach Party, Candace came up behind me and said, “What is that? That looks good! We should watch THAT!” Enough said.
